Program Description

The Net Science Academy offers the following challenging resources for the home school chemistry student.

Textbook

The Mastery of Matter:  A Solid Foundation in the History, Logics, and Skills of Chemsitry, by William Green, Ph.D.

This book covers all of the standard topics essential to a rigorous college prep chemistry course, sufficient to prepare students for the SAT™ subject test in chemistry including:

  • Matter and Measurement

  • Atomic Structure, Nuclear Chemistry and the Mole Concept

  • Electronic Structure of Atoms

  • Chemical Bonding

  • Stoichiometry

  • Thermochemistry

  • State of Matter and the Ideal Gas Law

  • Solutions

  • Acids and Bases

  • Electrochemistry

The above topics are covered in an interesting, challenging and understandable way, with a focus on logical reasoning and mathematical skills.  The text also offers a foundation in the history and nature of chemistry.  It is unique in its historical and logical approach.  You will not find anything like it anywhere else.

The text includes worked examples of calculations and extensive practice problem sets, including challenge problems. The answers to the problems are included in the back of the text.

The text will be available in August 2009.

Problem Set Solutions

This book includes the full worked solutions for each of the practice and challenge problems in the text.

Lab Manual

A rigorus lab component is essential to an authentic chemistry experience.  This book covers the following labs:

  • Matter and measurement

  • Relative mass

  • Flame tests

  • Molecular modeling

  • Boiling points

  • Determination of a chemical formula

  • Types of chemical reactions

  • Ratios of reactants in a chemical reaction

  • Stoichiometry of an antacid reaction

  • Prediction of precipitates

  • Acid-base titration

  • Electrochemical cells 

The manual is designed to be used with our rental lab kit, below.

Lab Kit Rental

The Net Science Academy offers a rental lab kit that includes all of the equipment needed for the above labs.

The kit also includes all of the necessary chemicals except for those that can be purchased at most local grocery or drug stores. The lab kit rental comes with Dr. Green’s lab instruction videos

Test Bank and Keys

This book includes reproducible unit tests with full worked answer keys.

Lecture Videos

The student can purchase access to Dr. Green’s supplemental online lecture videos, which can be viewed at the student’s leisure.  The 36 videos will cover all of the major topics in the course, and are designed to enhance the student’s learning experience (Sample 1, Sample 2).

Grading Services

The Net Science Academy offers grading services for tests and formal lab reports.

Tutoring

The Net Science Academy also offers one-on-one tutoring over the phone or internet.

    Good morning, I have two children interest in science. However, it is my weakest area. How does your support system work? Are the manuals/videos self motivating? Is the program all inclusive, or do I have to purchase items myself?

    Hello:

    Thank you for your interest. The program can be all inclusive. That is up to you. You may purchase any or all of the products and services on this page. This would include grading services. Please see the fees page for pricing.

    Purchased in its entirety, the course is inteded to be self-guiding. That is, the student will be able to learn on their own guided by the videos and manuals. The parent need not have chemistry expertise.

    One-on-one tutoring is also available (at an hourly rate).

    I plan to post a sample lecture video soon.
